Corrupt Politicians and the Election Time

          By Vic Odarve

Politicians may be immune to bribery and corruption charges because they have strong connections to the justice departments, billions of dollars at their disposal, and are members of a strong and influential political dynasty. Normally, corrupt individuals with strong ties to judicial officers are exempt from prosecution. Political leaders who became billionaires through illegal government transactions are expected to stay out of the court investigation. Strong political influences will extend their arms to cover up illegal acts committed by members of any political dynasty. This is the modern landscape in our democratic world; government and wealth… with the skillful maneuvering that may save politicians from imprisonment. But election time is coming!

Yes, a strong connection to any one of the judges could do wonders. Usually, the connection dates to the feudal times when grandparents were close to each other, friends, schoolmates, and events that were shared together. Some judges do some favors as personal gratitude to long- time friends and allies, and for aiding and defending them in their time of difficulty. It is the payback period. That is why some politicians, despite proof of voluminous files on graft and corruption, let the case drag slowly until it fades off into limbo. The case stands still like time and space in a black hole due to the strong gravitational pull. Such was the case of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, which is still in court. A few weeks ago, the Sandiganbayan ordered the Royal Traders Holding Company, Incorporated (RTHCI) to pay the Philippine government at least P367 million, saying the amount was part of the ill-gotten wealth of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his family. It is a frustrating scenario for the electorate and the voting public in general. Strong connections work!

Traditional or Recycled Politicians
The color of money still makes the difference. Politicians who are billionaires can afford good lawyers who will defend everything at all costs just to twist the case in their favor. On that point, there are reported instances where some members of the magistrates allegedly facilitate the sale of court decisions, influencing other justices to find in favor of the clients for a monetary value.  Take the example of the mayor of Makati City, Philippines. When an anti-graft court issued a 60-day suspension to a city mayor, the Court of Appeals came to the rescue. The Court of Appeals issued a temporary restraining order and then a writ of injunction on the Ombudsman order. The Senate investigating committee accused two Courts of Appeals justices of receiving money from a Makati mayor in exchange for an order restraining the Ombudsman from suspending the mayor under investigation. Worse, people clamor that CA justice is for sale. This restraining order saved the mayor from suspension. The color of money makes the difference.

Late Dictator Marcos

Political dynasties have always influenced court cases. Politics does influence the judges’ decisions considering their stakes in some of the client’s social and business circles. Some justices are appointed by the political kingpin of the area of legal power; others are associated with their jobs. With dynasty, democratic exercise can be easily manipulated for selfish purposes, allowing them to maintain power. In this way, they have monopolistic control over the economic resources within given territorial jurisdictions or bailiwicks. In areas where landlords and political clans dominate, justice usually runs in the favor of the mighty and powerful. Political dynasties rule!

But not all politicians and justices are built the same way. There are a few who are not after money or are afraid of the famous and powerful men in society. Most Filipinos feel that the government is really moving in Duterte’s term. Many people are hopeful that the president will indeed bring change to the country through his ‘build, build, build’ program. He fought and adhered to the law. Duterte is instrumental in closing the ABS CBN network that for years manipulated tax obligations. The people are indebted to Marcoleta and Defensor for sharing how the networks' tax fraud works. There are also some politicians and government employees who earn billions of pesos from public funds and other illegal sources and are charged with corruption and embezzlement. They are now languishing in prison. Such were the case of our Phil health officials and Senator De Lima.

Too much politicking, corruption, and political dynasties are widely blamed for weak democracy. These are the underlying reasons why cheaters in our government offices escape from punishment. Fighting corruption and cleansing judicial judges are necessary. It is a painful process but must be done. Crooked politicians and justices with corrupt inclinations must be out of our generation. Justice is not for sale!

Now, an election is coming. This is a time for change. Vote wisely. To recycle or not to recycle these traditional politicians is up to you. The choice is yours and is irrevocable when the dust of all our cities incarnadines the sunsets of the world.

Casimero Dagangon silingan ni Teria-103 yrs old

Transformation in Math and Spiritual Worlds

           By Vic Odarve

Only few people believe that transformation offers greater understanding in math and spiritual worlds. It gives a short cut and easier solution in complex math operations; offers another level of understanding and challenges beyond the scope of current theories in a higher dimension not seen before. It paves the passage into an understanding of the world beyond our finite mind and enable us to connect into the unknown. Since time immemorial, mankind is slowly trying to decipher the secrets in math and spiritual worlds through transformation.
Laplace Transform Table

Mathematical transformations, as another method of solving mathematics, enable the students’ thorough understanding. Most transformations give a short cut solution, easier to manipulate, and eliminate difficult traditional calculations. As mathematicians try to squeeze our mental faculties in finding shortcuts in some of our established mathematical concepts, they find out that transformations at some level can solve problems much simpler as traditional methods can offer. Transformation is another avenue in a realm of mathematics. It is another passageway. It is like wormholes that scientists want to explore in an intergalactic voyage into the unknown. Wormholes are shortcuts through time and space.

Transformation connects mankind to the spiritual world Most common mathematical transformations are logarithms, Laplace transforms, z transforms, etc. Transformation makes unconventional and difficult problems easier. It is just like asking the result of addition VI + XII? To make the computation easier, transform these Roman numerals to Arabic and transform back the answer into Roman numeral. That is, 6 + 12 = 18 or simply VI + XII = XVIII. That’s it. Simply amazing! The same case of logarithm where it transforms multiplication and division processes into a mere addition and subtraction, respectively. Laplace transformation does the same trick. Laplace transformation change differential and integral equations into multiplication and division algebraic polynomial expressions. Z-Transforms, a discrete equivalent of Laplace transforms, is another type of transformation used in signal processing, economics, and related fields. As our knowledge and understanding of our environment becomes more complex, the need of these transformations is necessary.

Jesus Transfiguration

Not only mathematics employs transformation. The bible, the source of our moral foundation of our Christian world, employs transformation to let mankind understands the messages from God. Biblical people transform themselves to a certain level, from flesh into spirit being, to enable them to talk with God. It is in this way that God the infinite can communicate mankind the finite. Revelation, for instance, John transforms into spirit form that enable him to write a book of prophesy on how mankind lives now to the end of time. (Rev 1:10) Still in spirit form the angel shows him the events that will lead to the end of history of mankind.

God, dwells in heaven, transforms Himself from spirit in human form to meet Abraham on his plan for Sodom and Gomorrah destruction. In that concluding encounter, Abraham said” What am I Lord, I am only dust and ashes”. Exodus 18:27. Death is another transformation. Death is not the end of our existence. It is just a transformation from flesh to spirit – another level of existence, thereby enables us to unite with God in his kingdom. It is a spiritual kingdom. God is spirit and we too face Him in spirit. Man is a spirit, with body and soul. Man’s spirit is an immaterial part that separates from the physical body after his death. Whether we like it or not, one day we all transform from physical body into spiritual existence. The bible says, ” So I want to teach you this mystery: although not all of us will die, all of us have to be transformed, in an instant, at the sound of the trumpet. You have heard of the last trumpet; then in the twinkling of an eye, the dead will be raised imperishable, while we shall be transformed.” 1 Corinthians 15, 50-51.

Thus, with various transformations, math understanding deepens, and spiritual wisdom heightens.

My Friend - A Labor Union Leader

        By Vic Odarve

He was one of those young and aggressive labor union leaders in the wood industry, as if by chance or fate, lead the leading company into a closure due to labor unrest. Like Hitler, he typically spoke with strong and remarkable persuasion and became the influential figure as one of the most feared worker’s local union leaders in the democratic country. Because of standoff between worker's union and the company, his close friend and supervisor Vic earnestly advised him what his best decision would be.” Monching, the wage increase is justifiable, why not accept the company’s reasonable offer instead of going a strike?” But Monching argued persuasively, “We don’t believe this company is losing. We will fight valiantly to the end”.

PICOP Bislig, Surigao del Sur

After a week of tedious negotiation with the arbitrary committee promptly formed by the local government, the company and the local labor union did not reach an agreement. Hence, labor strike ensued. The company stopped instantly its local operation, and the daily wage workers brought placards on the bustling streets demanding fiercely their wage increase. The strike incurred heavy loses to the company until it declared total closure. As in most big companies with labor unrest, this resulted to hundreds of families displaced and jobless. After a year, the affected workers tried landing any job just to have both ends meet.

Abandoned and dilapidated building

Forty years had passed, Monching looked old now. He had become weak, thin, and rough like all the men of impoverished households. With hair half combed, with dirty shirt, and dirty hands, he sat down near the window and always remembers the excellent advice from his plant supervisor Vic at the plywood department so long ago, when he was so powerful and so admired as a union leader. What would have happened if he had agreed and signed the agreement? Who knows, who knows? For sure, the company would still be operating, he mumbled.

One Sunday afternoon, as he walked leisurely along the Esperitu St. to refresh himself after the hard day’s work, suddenly he saw a decent man walking with a child. The man was Vic, his former supervisor and close friend, still looking young, still strong, still charming. He felt ashamed and emotional. Should he speak to him? Yes, of course. Why not?

"Good afternoon, Vic", he said with a smile. But Vic, astonished to be addressed by his name, did not recognize him. But after few breathless minutes, he precisely recalled his friend Monching and said gently, "Oh! ... my poor Monching, you have changed a lot! ..." "Yes, I have had some hard times since the company’s closure and encountered many miseries. It is because I did not heed your valuable advice." "Me? How can that be?" "You remember that instead of having to sign the stalemate labor agreement as what you’ve advised, I opted to have a strike? “, recalled Monching.

Technical Services Department
"Ah…Yes, well", said Vic with instantly dropping shoulders. “Well, I lost the job. As well as likely hundreds of daily wage earners. I did not see it. That advice was just taken for granted. “, added Monching.

Today the plant buildings and other edifices still stands out there … abandoned and dilapidated. It is a gruesome reminder of how Monching’s key decision as union leader collapsed the big company!

“Well, that is life. We can learn from our mistakes, but we must move on. Do not let regret gets you down,” added Vic. Life must go on!

Sometimes a friend’s advice must not be taken for granted. Regrets come always at the end.

 Thanks for watching.
