Quiz! Open Notes and Books

                                            By Vic Odarve

Just imagine a quiz with open books and notes to an engineering class! Students are smiling from ear to ear. But do students really get perfect scores? At first, students think they can get it handily, but these are not always the case. At the end only a few get a perfect score. Why? Engineering professors know best to what extent the degree of difficulty the quiz should be so that only a few can get away with perfect score. Professors know what makes an easy, moderate, and difficult problems. Mathematics is not a memory course, but largely understanding of the principles and formulas. It is more on understanding of when, how, and why we use the formulas and its applications in the solution. That is why it works on open notes and textbooks – a method of a student’s assessment. This is the real world for engineering students.

In the end, both professors and students are challenged and thrilled. If many students get perfect score the teachers seem defeated, but if only few, professors win the battle. It is like war, and a war of strategy, a war of nerves… and it’s enjoyable!

What about if in this war a professor is defeated? He can have his next round. The professor is the one who controls the war game. It is just like the China’s strategy in the South China sea against his neighboring countries. It is just like “to give difficult problems or not to give”- that is the question. So, at the end, the professors must have their heads high and always come out the winner.

Generally, quiz or assessment with open books and notes is more difficult than traditional closed exams. On this type of quiz, one or two of the given problems draws higher order thinking. More often students may not find the answers directly. Lecturers may offer open books and notes as an accommodation to help and challenge students to study their lessons.

Experience teaches us that only those students who have recognized masterfully the math concepts, formulas, or procedures in a different order and at various levels of difficulty than they are presented in their textbook or discussed in the class and proof- read the solutions before going out the exam room may get away with perfect scores. When lecturers give a quiz in mathematics, one of the problems must be difficult or required extra/ deeper analysis, at least. So, who wants to get a perfect score? Only those students who study an extra mile from the classroom discussion can get the perfect score.

These very few students who get away with perfect scores out from difficult mathematical problems of the highest order are a gem to the teacher. They are like our moon, which was born from a planet sized object which rammed the earth 4.5 billion of years ago. It provides romantic lights at nighttime. These students, like our moon, give delight and color to our classroom atmosphere. Imagine? They get perfect scores. They are showing their level of excellence. This is our real world, student’s university life, and a reality. We are talking of a real environment and not wormholes, which arise from our imagination.

So, who wants open notes and book examination? It may happen once in your student’s life… once in a blue moon. Try and enjoy your university life for the engineering students!

Thanks for watching.

Bathala

                             GIDAMGO KO ANG BATHALA

                                        Ni Vic Odarve

 Gihulma ko ang imong larawan

Nga ako nikatkat ngadto sa kalangitan

Uban sa mga bitoon ug mga kalibutan

Nga misud-ong sa imong kabulahanan.

 Gipintal ko ang imong hitsura

Ang imong kaanyag wa gyoy sama

Nga nahisulat na sa akong pangisip

Milambo daw nga way makahulip.

Diha naaninaw ko ang imong dughan

Sa damgo mao nay tomoy sa katumanan

Kang Adonis iya siyang giampoan

Ug gisangyaw pa sa ubang kanasuran.

 Ikaw gyod ang natawong prinsisa

Nagpukaw sa dughan kong nag-usisa

Uban ang swerte kong kapalaran

Nga ikaw gyod ang akong nakit-an.

 Gusto ko nang ikaw isangyaw

Aron dili ka madaling mahanaw

Kay gililok ko ikaw akong bathala

Nga permi gyod sa akong hunahuna.

Apan sa diha nang ikaw nakita

Maoy katumanan sa mga propeta

Gikan sa pobre kong panghunahuna

Sa damgo lang diay ikaw namugna.

Videoke Singing Makes People Happy and Healthy

By Vic Odarve

As more and more people around the globe are looking for a better and longer life, videoke singing is the best pastime they could have. It gives happiness as it brings a positive mood, vibrant outlook, and forget problems at work and home, and gives people positive psychological and physical effects. It further necessitates deep breathing, reduce anxiety, and relieve stress; thus facilitates healthy life.

Videoke singing fosters happy mood as people sing along the highlighted song lyrics from a screen and follow a cursor as its guide. This gives a unique opportunity that even those who cannot even carry a tune can do singing with less effort or know-how; thus in the process building your confidence…at least singing in a crowd. Further, a score based on your ability to synchronize timing and pace with the lyrics, which the machine gives at the end of the song makes you happy. Why not? Just sing your favorite song and it will lower your depression and immediately brings you happiness. It encourages people to socialize with the group. Getting and singing along with the group with a bottle of beer combat the negative mood that often comes along their daily tasks in the city life. Scientists found out that singing activates the pleasure center of the male's brain; the effect which doesn't take place when you are not singing at all. As you concentrate singing, things like work or money or family problems are gone; keeping brains active and fend off depression, especially in older people.

Moreover, videoke singing is highly entertaining and others consider it as a pastime and nothing more. But some are lucky and catapulted them to join talent search -- "reality" singing competitions like "American Idol" and "Israel X Factor”. Constant practice may develop their innate talent as a singer, and maybe brings to stardom. Such was the case of Rose Fostanes, who from anonymous caregiver to reality TV star began in a south Tel Aviv karaoke bar, located a few doors down from a brothel; wins the hearts of the judges with her amazing voice; and won the contest Israel's X-Factor. Thus, videoke singing brings her fame and happiness.

Jun singing career started fom videoke.

Health-wise, deep breathing and relaxation in controlling voice and other related actions as you sing along are components of meditation and physical exercise necessary for good health. Researchers found that the act of singing releases endorphins, the brain's "feel good" chemicals. Singing also brings us a ‘lifted’ feeling which reduces stress; draws action which promotes good blood circulation, and in the process brings good health. Researchers at Japan's Osaka University studied salivary cortical levels and other physiological responses and found that singing, especially music with a major (rather than minor) tone, is correlated with lowered stress as well as feelings of happiness; thus promotes health.
